Squid Game Emmy Awards 2022 – Series Makes 2 Historic Wins

The two Squid Game Emmy Awards wins have been seen as a big one for the Korean entertainment industry as it makes history with its two Primetime Emmy Awards.

 

Lee Jung-jae was the main cast for Netflix’s 2021 Squid Game series, he played the main character, Seong Gi-hun. The character, Seong Gi-hun was also one of the players who got invited to play the games. Lee Jung-jae actually delivered a wonderful performance of his character for the series. The Korean actor has since received honors and accolades since the release of the Squid Game series. Now, he has made history by becoming the first non-English language Emmy Awards winner. The award for the best drama series actor went to him while the award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series went to Squid Game’s director.

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk also made history with his win as it’s the first time a non-English language drama won in that category. Other Tv series like Succession, Severance, Ozark and Yellowjackets were also nominated for the category.

 

Both and Lee Jung-jae’s Emmy wins have opened doors for other Asian actors and actresses out there. “This is a major moment for us”, Dong-hyuk said while talking to news reporters backstage. While Lee Jung-jae also thanked Hwang, saying “Thank you for making realistic problems we face come to life so creatively on the screen”. Lee now speaking in Korean, also joyfully thanked his friends, family and dearest fans.

 

Hwang Dong-hyuk also stated that he truly hopes that Squid Game won’t be the last non-English series to be at the Emmys. He also wished that this win won’t be his last Emmy either.

Squid Game Emmy Awards 2022: Why It Deserves The Wins

Netflix’s 2021 survival drama television series, Squid Game, garnered a lot of attention and up to this moment, it’s one of Netflix’s best releases. The series is about financially wrecked players getting into what seemed to be a children’s game at first. Deep into the series, the hidden diabolical twist and turns of the games were revealed. It became a brutal survival contest for the players who once thought that they got themselves into an easy-to-win game.

 

All these and lots of other interesting events from the series made viewers much engrossed in it. It made them want to see to the very end, the end of Squid Game. It’s also worthy to note that Squid Game became a global sensation in 2021, it is also most watched show. According to Wikipedia, Squid Game currently sits at Netflix’s most watched TV series with over 1,600 million watch hours.

 

On Rotten Tomatoes, Squid Game currently sits at 95% on the average Tomatometer and 83% its average audience score. The whole series was made with just over 21 million U.S dollars and according to Bloomberg.com, it raked in over $900 million.

 

Other Squid Game Emmy Nominations and wins For 2022

For this year’s Emmy’s, Squid Game has actually won a total of six awards out of the fourteen it was nominated for. The series won in the following categories:

  • Outstanding Stunt Performance
  • Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Single Episode
  • Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary Program (One Hour or More).

Other Squid Game Emmy nominations (2022) are:

Back in September 4, actress Lee Yoo-mi went home with an award from the Creative Arts Emmys. Lee Yoo-mi played Ji-yeong in the series and won in the category of Outstanding Guest Actress.

Squid Game 2 Release Date – When Is It Coming Out?

At this moment, there have not been a lot of information on Squid Game Season 2 but Netflix confirmed that there’d be a second season. In June 2022, Netflix confirmed this via a tweet containing Hwang Dong-hyuk’s letter to fans of the series.

 

As you can see in the tweet above, Squid Game Season 2 will have some returning cast and would definitely be mind-blowing. Although, there’s no set date for Squid Game 2 release, Hwang Dong-hyuk told Vanity Fair that it’d be at the end of 2023 or 2024.
